First Graders are so ready for Halloween! This week we got to read TWO fun picture books to gear up for the spooky holiday: The Little Bit Scary People by Emily Jenkins and Halloween Hats by Elizabeth Winthrop.

The Little Bit Scary People is a great reminder of why we should never judge people by how they look on the outside. The colorful illustrations and conversational text make this a perfect read-aloud book with a powerful message.

If you love Halloween and rhyming, then Halloween Hats is the book for you! This light-hearted story features all types of fun ideas for costumes. The pictures will make you want to throw a Halloween party as soon as you close the book!
This week, Kindergarten and 1st grade students heard Little Dalton’s Book of the Month, Where the Wild Things Are!

This week 1st grade got in the groove for Halloween by reading The Witch’s Walking Stick by Susan Meddaugh.

We all had quite the laugh during this story as a young girl accidentally discovers the magic of an evil witch’s walking stick. It was a lot of fun to talk about what each of us would wish for if we had a magic stick of our own!
The week of September 27th, 1st graders heard the story Lester Fizz, Bubble-Gum Artist by Ruth Spiro.

This adorably illustrated book tells the story of Lester Fizz, a boy who comes from a family of artists and finally finds his niche by creating art out of bubble gum! The story itself is quite funny, and those who love art history will appreciate the various famous pieces of artwork that pop up throughout the book.
During the first week of school, we read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs because a 3-D movie version of the book was released on September 18th.

The book is a classic favorite, and the students really enjoyed the zany pictures and fantastic storyline.
In the following weeks, many students reported back that they had seen the movie and although it was fun and exciting it was nothing like the book. Hooray for being media savvy!
