It has been an exciting start to the 2011-2012 school year! Each week, students in all the grades have been hearing stories that help us understand all the rules of the library and how to use it. And now we’re getting ready to welcome two fabulous visitors: Brian and Andrea Pinkney.
They’ll be visiting on Monday, October 31st so we’ve been trying to read a few of their stories to get to know their work. We can’t wait to meet them and hear all about the process of making a picture book!
This week, 2nd and 3rd Grade students are reading all the 2011 Caldecott winners!
Do you think this year’s picks are award-worthy? Visit our blog’s Books of the Winter Months entry to share your opinion.
In honor of Black History Month, 3rd grade read from another collection of classic Southern Tales:
Porch Lies – Tales of Slicksters, Tricksters, and Other Wily Characters by Patricia C. McKissack.
It has been fascinating to compare the different collections of stories we have read and see what common themes are threaded throughout. Characters are faced with challenges and often look to an element of the supernatural to overcome them. The stories are an interesting reflection of different ways people have tried to cope with difficult times throughout history.
In honor of Black History Month, 3rd graders have been hearing some classic African-American folktales from the South.
The Dark Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural by Patricia McKissack is a wonderful collection of haunting stories. Students have been on the edge of their seats!
Throughout the winter, 3rd grade classes are hearing fabulous tales from all over the world to correspond with the classroom curriculum.
Whether its Aztecs, Vikings, Explorers, Native Americans, or the Dutch – every part of history has a great work of fiction to go with it!
Third grade is down to business in the library! Throughout the winter months, classes have been hearing more about the various online resources available through the library website. Hopefully it will all come in handy for the exciting projects in store this year!
All throughout the start of the school year, every grade level has been sharing Patricia Reilly Giff books during our time together in order to prepare for her visit on Wednesday, November 3rd. We can’t wait to meet her!
Visit the “Ode to Books” section of the blog to see a video that 1st Grade students put together in her honor.
For their last library visits here at Little Dalton, Third Graders have been in for a treat: a chance to visit the Middle School Library! Students have enjoyed meeting the Middle School librarians, Roxanne Feldman and Joseph Quain, and seeing all the amazing books they can look forward to borrowing at Big Dalton.
This week Third Grade students got a hint of eerie tales from around the world in Virginia Hamilton’s book: Dark Way – Stories from the Spirit World.
As the spring progresses, Third Graders are becoming more and more ready to transition to Middle School researching! Each week they’re learning more about the wide variety of online resources available through the Dalton website.
The school’s subscriptions to many online encyclopedias and databases are an amazing resource for all members of the community.
