Books We Read In Library: Grade 1

Duck, Duck, Dewey!

- Date: 05.5.10

This week Kindergarten and First Grade students are celebrating the fact that we’ve learned about the various sections in the Dewey Decimal System.  With games like Duck, Duck, Dewey and Dewey Dare, it’s a trivia extravaganza with prizes galore!

Baloney (Henry P.)

- Date: 04.29.10

What do you get when you mix an alien, his angry teacher, and some very interesting sounding words?  A recipe for a great read-aloud with First Grade students!  Baloney (Henry P.) by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith is a genius combination of a clever story and fun illustrations.

And of course, after reading a story about an alien we had to learn exactly where to find books with real facts about them while reviewing the 000s (General Works), 100s (Philosophy/Psychology), and 200s (Religion) sections of the Dewey Decimal System.

The Giving Tree

- Date: 04.19.10

In honor of both Poetry Month and Earth Day this week, Kindergarten and First Grade students heard The Giving Tree by renowned poet Shel Silverstein.

This beautiful story of a boy and his friend, the tree, is a touching reminder to never take unconditional love for granted – whether it be from family, friends, or Mother Earth.

Happy 40th Earth Day!

Poetry Month

- Date: 04.15.10

April is National Poetry Month! So this week, Kindergarteners and First Graders got to hear a sampling of fun poems from the book, Rolling in the Aisles: Kids Pick the Funniest Poems.

It was definitely hard not to giggle at the many silly rhymes we shared.  And afterward we talked about which Dewey section has Poetry and Plays (800s), as well as the section for Arts and Recreation (700s).

Dear Fish

- Date: 04.9.10

Ever throw a message in a bottle into the ocean?  Ever gotten a response?  You wouldn’t believe what happens in one small town when a boy sends the fish a message in a bottle in the rousing tale Dear Fish by Chris Gall.

This book served as a great introduction for our review about two very important categories in the Dewey Decimal System:  the 500s (Science) and 600s (Technology).

The Mystery of Eatum Hall

- Date: 03.19.10

First graders geared up for spring break with a bracing mystery:  The Mystery of Eatum Hall by John Kelly and Cathy Tincknell.

Sherlock Holmes would have been proud as students used eerie clues in each illustration to get to the bottom of this meaty mystery.  And it really got our brains clicking in time to review how all fiction books (Picture, I-Can-Read, and Chapter) are organized in a library.

I-Can-Read Dr. Seuss

- Date: 03.1.10

As we continue to honor Dr. Seuss and his silly rhymes, Kindergarten and 1st grade students heard a variety of Seuss books this week.

Reading the different stories by Theodor Seuss Giesel is a great lead-in as we discuss how the  I-Can-Read section of the library is organized (alphabetical by author’s last name, just like picture books!).

Dr. Seuss Month

- Date: 02.22.10

March begins Dr. Seuss Month!  In preparation, 1st grade students got to hear some classic Dr. Seuss rhymes.

Some classes enjoyed Daisy Head Mayzie, and others got a kick out of Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose.

Pete and Pickles

- Date: 02.17.10

This week 1st grade was totally enraptured by the story of Pete and Pickles by Berkeley Breathed

(known for his revered comic strip, Bloom County).

The illustrations completely draw the reader in as Pete and Pickles develop a heart-warming friendship.  The clever writing and amusing picture details on each page make this an entertaining read for people of all ages.  Perfect timing as we review how picture books are organized on the shelf (alphabetical by author’s last name!).

Coretta Scott King Award

- Date: 02.9.10

This week Kindergarten and 1st grade students learned about the Coretta Scott King Award, an award for books that celebrate diversity.
