{"id":4,"date":"2023-05-23T17:24:41","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T17:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/theconstitution\/home\/"},"modified":"2023-06-02T13:47:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T13:47:39","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/theconstitution\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Constitution, to quote Edmund Morgan, \u201cinvented the American people, a fictional body comprising all the people of the whole nation, endowed with sovereign powers superior to those of the people of any state or of all the states.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After engaging in close reading of the Constitution as part of Assignment 7, ninth grade history students were each assigned a section of the Constitution to explore in greater depth. In addition to accurately translating the prose of their section of the Constitution into words more readily understandable to a contemporary audience, students created video presentations outlining the content and significance of a selection of the Constitution to be shared with the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following are the questions guiding student inquiry:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Context<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the historical forces giving rise to the text in your excerpt? What was the author\u2019s motivation for including it? What is it responding to?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Common Interpretation<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your own words, what is the commonly understood meaning of this text?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Matters of Debate<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How has this particular provision been interpreted in divergent ways?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the claims the legal scholars make about the different interpretations? What evidence do they provide to support their claims?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you identify a Supreme Court case\/ruling that illustrates the debate over how to interpret this particular text?
