However it was,<br \/>\nNeither refused the meeting. But the hand!<br \/>\nThe boy&#8217;s first outcry was a rueful laugh,<br \/>\nAs he swung toward them holding up the hand<br \/>\nHalf in appeal, but half as if to keep<br \/>\nThe life from spilling. Then the boy saw all\u2014<br \/>\nSince he was old enough to know, big boy<br \/>\nDoing a man&#8217;s work, though a child at heart\u2014<br \/>\nHe saw all spoiled. &#8220;Don&#8217;t let him cut my hand off\u2014<br \/>\nThe doctor, when he comes. Don&#8217;t let him, sister!&#8221;<br \/>\nSo. But the hand was gone already.<br \/>\nThe doctor put him in the dark of ether.<br \/>\nHe lay and puffed his lips out with his breath.<br \/>\nAnd then\u2014the watcher at his pulse took fright.<br \/>\nNo one believed. They listened at his heart.<br \/>\nLittle\u2014less\u2014nothing!\u2014and that ended it.<br \/>\nNo more to build on there.
