Cyrene, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site in eastern modern Libya, was the leading city of the Libyan Pentapolis. Settled by Greek colonists toward the end of the 7th century B.C., it remained an active Graeco-Roman city of distinctively Hellenic character until the time of the Islamic conquest (A.D. 643).”

Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica
Courtesy of King’s college of London.

Taucheira (Arsinoe)
“According to Greek researcher Herodotus of Halicarnassus, Taucheira (also known as Tauchira and Teuchira) was the youngest of the five Greek cities in the Cyrenaica (map). Excavations in the 1960’s, however, have brought to light ceramics than are much older than expected (fourth quarter of the seventh century), and it is now obvious that the town was among the oldest.” Articles on Germania Inferior excerpted from Livius: Articles on ancient history.
