{"id":1717,"date":"2016-05-25T19:09:54","date_gmt":"2016-05-25T23:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/?page_id=1717"},"modified":"2016-05-25T19:09:54","modified_gmt":"2016-05-25T23:09:54","slug":"2016-summer-reading-requirements-for-rising-6th-grade-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/2016-summer-reading-requirements-for-rising-6th-grade-students\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Summer Reading Requirements for Rising 6th Grade Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dear 5th-into-6th Graders,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><b>When I look back, I am so impressed again<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>with the life-giving power of literature.\u00a0<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>myself in the world, I would do that again by reading,<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>just as I did when I was young.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Maya Angelou<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, students gain a better sense of themselves through the exploration of different characters and their experiences in literature. \u00a0Summer is a time of fun, exploration, and growth for middle school students; it is the perfect time to READ, READ, and READ! To read for pleasure can be one of the most rewarding activities in life. Now that the school year is coming to an end, we encourage you to continue to enjoy worthwhile books over the summer.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Please<\/strong> <\/span><b>read at least two books from the<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/2016-summer-recommended-reading-for-rising-5th-and-6th-grade-students\/\" target=\"_blank\">Recommended\u00a0<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/2016-summer-recommended-reading-for-rising-5th-and-6th-grade-students\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summer Reading List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/recommended-book-series\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recommended Book Series List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0prepared by Ms. Feldman, or from\u00a0bookstores and other libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In addition, there are two required summer reading titles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 Please read <\/span><b><i>Becoming Naomi Leon <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by Pam Mu\u00f1oz Ryan and <\/span><b><i>Shakespeare\u2019s Secret <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by Elise Broach. There will be a writing activity on these books at the beginning of 6th grade. We advise that you finish them at the end of August. DO NOT ANNOTATE! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> For the required reading, there are two requirements: word study and analytical organizers. <\/span><b>\u00a0Bring both Assignments to school when you return in September. <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1hXhYuzrsX_eWFjSEtNC7_7cxqwzgoxnrWePo1aKN3ZU\/edit?usp=sharing\">Click here to access the\u00a0instruction sheet for both parts of the Assignment<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This means that you will<\/span><b> read at least FOUR books<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> this summer.\u00a0 Of course, we would like if you read a lot more than four books.
