{"id":1535,"date":"2015-05-26T21:44:19","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T01:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/?page_id=1535"},"modified":"2015-05-26T21:44:19","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T01:44:19","slug":"2015-summer-reading-requirements-for-rising-6th-grade-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/2015-summer-reading-requirements-for-rising-6th-grade-students\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 Summer Reading Requirements for Rising 6th Grade Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For current 5th grade students, please read the following carefully in preparation of your fall English classes:<\/p>\n<p>Dear 5th-into-6th Graders,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><em><strong>W<\/strong><strong>hen I look back, I am so impressed again<br \/>\nwith the life-giving power of literature.<br \/>\nIf I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of<br \/>\nmyself in the world, I would do that again by reading,<br \/>\njust as I did when I was young.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;padding-left: 60px\"><strong>&#8212; Maya Angelou<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, students gain a better sense of themselves through the exploration of different characters and their experiences in literature. Summer is a time of fun, exploration, and growth for middle school students; it is the perfect time to READ, READ, and READ! Imagine how we will grow as individuals and learn about our world.<\/p>\n<p>To read for pleasure can be one of the most rewarding activities in life. Now that the school year is coming to an end, we encourage you to continue to enjoy worthwhile books over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Please <strong>read at least two books<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/2015-summer-recommended-reading-for-rising-5th-and-6th-grade-students\/\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Summer Recommended Reading\u00a0for Rising 5th and 6th Graders<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dalton.org\/mslibrary\/recommended-book-series\/\" target=\"_blank\">Recommended Book Series<\/a> lists prepared by Ms. Feldman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition, there are two required summer reading titles<\/strong>.\u00a0 Please read <strong><em>Becoming Naomi Leon <\/em><\/strong>by Pam Mu\u00f1oz Ryan and <strong><em>Shakespeare\u2019s Secret <\/em><\/strong>by Elise Broach. There will be a writing activity on these books at the beginning of 6th grade. We advise that you finish it at the end of August.\u00a0 As you read each book, circle any vocabulary you do not know and underline important passages. <strong>Create a <\/strong><strong><em>graphic organizer<\/em><\/strong><strong> for each book, and bring both organizers to school when you return in September. See\u00a0instruction below\u00a0for this part of the Assignment. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>* * *\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1mQSykLd0ytmTgJpxRdoQe5pzfUNRn6l--a9nOFq6F_k\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">Directions and sample graphic organizers can be found\u00a0here.<\/a>\u00a0* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This means that you will<strong> read at least FOUR books<\/strong> this summer.\u00a0 Of course, we would like if you read a lot more than four books.
