Books We Read In Library: Grade 1

The nation is preparing to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the Day of Service in his honor.

MLK-Day-of-Service

During Library, First Grade classes read Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace by James Proimos.

This book is a perfect example of how people of all ages can make the world a brighter place just by being kind.  We then talked about how Dr. King taught us all to care for others, and why it is so fitting that his holiday was declared a Day of Service across the country.  We agreed that even if we can’t go out and do an official service project, we can try our best to be kind to everyone we meet that day and spread joy in honor of Dr. King’s legacy.

Kindergarten and First Grade Students are staying in the holiday spirit by enjoying some fun picture books about Christmas and Kwanzaa.

We’ve also talked about the 3 different types of fiction books in our library – Picture, I Can Read, and Chapter – and how to locate them on the library shelves.

Thanksgiving and Hanukkah

- Date: 11.13.13

This year (for the first time in almost 100 years!), Thanksgiving and Hanukkah will be celebrated at the same time.

The next time this happens will likely be the year 2070, so we’re really enjoying this rare occurrence by sharing both Thanksgiving and Hanukkah books to get in the spirit of the holidays.

Ally Week

- Date: 10.28.13

The library was pleased to join in the celebration of ALLY WEEK this year.

What a wonderful time to affirm that our community is a safe space for all, and in particular show our support for gay and lesbian families.  We were pleased to spotlight an Ally Week display featuring books representing all kinds of families and ways to be good friends.

Love-Makes-a-Family

In preparation for our visit with Eric Velasquez on Friday, November 1st, all Houses in Little Dalton have been reading the two books he wrote and illustrated:  Grandma’s Records and Grandma’s Gift.

We also discussed Mr. Velasquez’s extensive career as an illustrator for over 300 books.  We can’t wait to meet him!

This fall welcomed the cinematic release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.  But not many people know… there was a book that came way before any movie!

CloudyMovie2

Judi Barrett wrote Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh, decades ago.

So Kindergarten and 1st grade students read both during library to gain an appreciation for what was the same and different between the books and movies.

We also finished up our overview of the Dewey Decimal System:

the 500s (Science), 400s (Languages), 300s (Culture and Fairy Tales), 200s (Religion/Mythology), 100s (Philosophy), and 000s (General Information).

Students know they don’t need to memorize this, but it’s great to have a general sense of how to find books on their favorite topics!
