Class Info
The 2009 -2010 school year is underway and Younge House is rockin’! We have taken a tour of the entire building; settled into our desks, hooks and cubbies; scoped out the lunch offerings; and traveled to P.E., science, and music all by ourselves. Here are a few items you may want to make note of:
Planbooks/Homework: Students have already begun receiving homework. They are to write all assignments in their planbooks. Please ask them to show you their planbooks and assignments regularly. Learning to manage assignments and time is a huge part of the middle school transition. In the classroom, we do as much as possible to help students figure out what schedule will work best in completing long term assignments, however we cannot always account for after school obligations and family events. In addition to regular math, spelling, and writing skills work, students are to read for 1/2 hour each night and record their reading in their planbook (e.g. Good Book pages 5 – 109). Ms. Younge checks this regularly.
Supplies: The supply list is put together annually after reviewing how various materials fared the year before. We have found that the tab dividers with pockets really are best. Otherwise everything has to be hole-punched or cannot be put in its proper section.
Late arrivals: Children are allowed into the room at 7:45am. 7:45 is a great time to arrive because there is plenty of time to organize supplies, talk to friends, and generally get settled. House Morning Meetings begin promptly at 8:00am. If your child arrives after 8:10am and we have taken down the attendance sheet, they will need to check in with Yolanda Ortiz in the 8th Floor office.
Absence: If your child will be absent, please send an email to both Ms. Younge ( lyounge at dalton.org) and Yolanda Ortiz ( yolanda_ortiz at dalton.org) as soon as possible.
Pick-up: Students are responsible for knowing how they are going home. They must sign in each morning and let the office know who will be picking them up. It is not necessary to send a separate note to Ms. Younge. Students and parents should choose a spot outside of the building where they will meet their picker-upper each day. If there is a change of plans, call or email Ms. Younge and she will relay the message. Everyday one of our 4th grade associates will be on hand to supervise, ready to help if your child has any questions or trouble.
Early Dismissal: If you will be picking up your child early, please let myself and Yolanda Ortiz know. Ms. Ortiz will need either an email or a written note dismissing your child early.
Afterschool: The ENCORE! Coordinator is Jennifer Beasmoney. If you need to send your child to homework club urgently, you can call the MS office or send an email to Jennifer and myself.
Birthdays: We love birthday parties! Birthdays are celebrated during lunch from 11:15-11:45 and parents are invited to hang out with us during this time. Feel free to bring a treat, but make sure it is allergy friendly.
Blog: Obviously you have found our blog. It will be a great resource for you this year. We will be posting selected work, pictures, information about what we are studying, and links to resources you can browse at home. Feel free to direct interested friends and relatives to the site and leave comments. The moderator monitors for content.
