• Make several labs with your teacher to make certain that your notes taken during class are adequate. It’s very hard to take good notes and often students write too much. Let your teacher be your guide.
• When reading, paraphrase (in your own words) in the margins. This will make the material your own and will be a definite aid when you are reviewing large amounts of material for tests. Also, use your text as a notebook and annotate it during class with comments from teachers and classmates. Highlight all noted paragraphs/speeches and interpret in the margins.
• Put all vocabulary words on cards (3×5) – including any terms used during the course. On the back of the card write the definition. Place the first letter of the word being defined in the upper corner on the back. This way, the words may be reviewed going backwards. Read the definition and see the first letter and write or say the word or phrase. This will help you practice retrieving the word as well as learning the spelling of it. Writing the word also reinforces it in your memory and is very helpful when learning vocabulary (in any language). Learn new vocabulary words on a daily basis and review old ones several times a week. You are trying to commit them to long-term memory and this takes work and repetition.
