When a student is admitted to the Dalton School, it is with the understanding that (s)he will be provided “an education of excellence that meets each student’s interests, abilities and needs within a common curricular framework, and that challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity and curiosity.” (Mission Statement) To that end, the Dalton Plan uniquely supports students by providing opportunities for them to meet individually with teachers for additional support/enrichment. In addition, understanding the variables among learning profiles and individual pacing, Dalton employs a large support staff of learning specialists who are trained to facilitate the attainment of our goal of academic independence. Consequently, private support services are recommended only after the internal supports have been exhausted.
This posting sets forth the learning support services offered at Dalton. In addition, included are statements regarding the school-wide policies for external evaluations, private tutoring and school accommodations for documented learning differences. Although we do not promote private tutors, we do recognize that there are situations in which tutoring is recommended. Specific guidelines for tutoring are found in both the student and faculty handbooks. Students are responsible for reading and following them.
