Dear 5th-into-6th Graders,

Reading for pleasure can be one of the most rewarding activities in life.

When I look back, I am so impressed again
with the life-giving power of literature.~
If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of
myself in the world, I would do that again by reading,
just as I did when I was young.
— Maya Angelou

Summer is a time of fun, exploration, and growth, and it is the perfect time to READ, READ, READ! Since there seems to be an almost unlimited number of book titles to choose from, we are providing a reading list, so you can continue to enjoy great books and stories over the summer.

You are expected to finish at least four books this summer.  However, knowing how much you all love to read, we are sure you will easily surpass this expectation.  Please read at least three books from the Summer Reading List for Rising 5th and 6th Graders and the Recommended Book Series list prepared by Mrs. Feldman.

In addition to the three choice books, there is one grade-wide required summer reading title: Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan.  We advise you to read this novel at the end of the summer, so it will be fresh in your mind when you return to Dalton in September.  You will be asked to write a paragraph on this book in class. To better prepare yourself for writing the paragraph, please read this Close Reading and Annotation Guidelines before you start reading the book. As you read this book, please complete this Graphic Organizer.

We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you back as 6th graders.
