Dear Fourth-into-Fifth Graders,

Many new academic experiences await you in Dalton’s fifth grade, and the Fifth Grade House Advisors are looking forward to meeting each one of you. Because we feel that reading is such an important part of your educational and personal development, your summer assignment is to read Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, as well as two books of your choice.  There is no written assignment for A Wrinkle in Time; simply come to fifth grade ready to discuss the concept of “tessering” in the story, as well as the character of Meg Murry.  In terms of the other two books, you can choose from the Recommended Summer Reading List and the Recommended Book Series List, prepared by Mrs. Feldman, or explore bookstores and libraries for great new titles and classics.

This means that you need to read at least THREE books over the summer — but of course, you can read many more. We request that you record the titles and authors of all the books you devour. In September, Mrs. Feldman and Mr. Quain will have you share some of your favorite books and series.

However, since many of you will have the pleasure of reading the following books with your classmates next year, we ask you to NOT choose the following books as your summer reading books:

Have a wonderful summer,

Sincerely,
House Advisors, Fifth Grade
