Math Activities
Cuisenaire Rods
As an introduction to our unit on Division, we spent several days working closely with Cuisenaire Rods. After exploring the rods and making observations about their size and relationship to one another, we used the rods to create multiplication and division equations and play games.
Game Day!
On December 16th the fourth grade participated in our first Game Day. Students rotated between the classrooms, providing everyone with an opportunity to work with different peers and different teachers. Each classroom ran a math game, including Set, 24, Whack-a-Mole, Around the World and Splat Squares. At the end of the period, students chose from a grab bag of prizes. The frog pencil toppers were especially popular! Check out the photos from Game Day below!

Base Ten Building Activity
Our math class used Base Ten Blocks to build castles, houses, and geometric patterns. Each student was assigned a number, and was allowed to use as many blocks as they wanted, in any combination of hundreds, tens, and ones blocks. Their only restriction? The value of the total number of blocks used could not exceed the value of the student’s assigned number. In addition to building, students wrote their number in expanded notation and used it to solve a multiplication equation. Check out all their hard work below!

Math-A-Pillars
![]()
We used Math-A-Pillars to help us learn about place value, and reading and writing large numbers. After deciding the value of their individual math-a-pillar, students labeled the Hundreds, Thousands, and Millions Periods, as well as the Hundreds, Tens, and Ones Sections (HTO) within each period. Meet the math-a-pillars below!
