America’s Champion Swimmer: Gertrude Ederle

In honor of March being Women’s History Month, 2nd grade students heard the amazing story America’s Champion Swimmer: Gertude Ederle by David Adler.

Ms. Ederle made headlines when she became the first woman in history to swim across the English Channel in 1926.  What an inspiration!

This week 2nd grade students heard Sukey and the Mermaid by Robert D. San Souci.

This Southern tale is rooted in the supernatural.  Stories involving magic and superstition often provided a welcome escape from thinking about the hardships of daily life.

The Gold Cadillac

This week 2nd grade students discussed The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor.

The book’s portayal of an African-American family living in the South during the Civil Rights Movement gave students a glimpse into what life might have been like during those difficult times.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle

As a follow-up to learning about Beverly Cleary and her work, 2nd graders were in for a treat: watching a video version of her classic book The Mouse and the Motorcycle!

Caldecott and Newbery Award Winners!

This week, all classes talked about the 2010 Caldecott and Newbery Award winners:

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney won the Caldecott Award

This week 2nd grade learned all about Beverly Cleary, a reknowned children’s book author and Newbery Award winner.

Newbery Award Winners

The Newbery Award is granted to the best chapter books of the year.   The 2010 winners will be announced on Monday, January 18th so 2nd grade students are now learning more about the noteworthy books that have won the medal in the past.

King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub

This week 2nd grade students got quite a laugh hearing the story King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub by Audrey Wood.

This Caldecott Honor Book is so odd, students were a bit dismayed!  The quirky story about a stubborn king and queen really sparks the imagination.
