The Walk in the Forest

Walking in the wood,
it is calm
leaves fall across the path.

Water falls across
the path,
it glitters in the sun.

Sun bounces off the water
it is graceful
it is summer time.

Northeast Shelter

This paper is about how the Native Americans of the northeast built and used their houses and what the inside of a longhouse looks like. First I will tell you about how northeast Indians made their houses. Then I will tell you my reader how the northeast Indians used their houses. After that I will tell you about what the inside of a longhouse looks like. Iroquois and Lenape are two northeast tribes. There are a lot of animals in the northeast. It is a rich land.

This part of my paper is about how the northeast Indians built wigwams and longhouses. The longhouse was made out of upright logs and cross poles curved with elm bark. The longhouse has a curved roof of saplings curved with elm bark. The wigwams were smaller than the longhouse. They were made out of saplings bent over so there was a curved frame. Then they would tie the saplings together with deer hide. Then they would put bark on the frame. The things that they used to build their houses were logs, bark, elm bark, birch bark, hides, saplings, reeds, grasses, and bast. Bast is peeled off inner bark. So you see it is hard to make northeast Indians houses.

This part of my paper is about what the northeast Indians used their houses for. They slept in their houses and when it rained they went inside their houses. They were born in their houses and had funerals outside of their houses. They ate and slept and had fires in their houses and cooked. I hope you have learned something about what they used their houses for.

This part of my paper is about what the inside of a longhouse looks like. The northeast Indians slept in compartments or bark benches covered with skins and hides. They had fires in their houses so they had to have a smoke hole in the roof, so when it rained, they had to close a bark flap with a wooden pool. Bark or hides separated the compartments. The inside of the houses were very complex, like corn hanging from the ceiling. That is why I chose this topic.

When I say Indians I do not mean Indians from India I mean fromĀ  the northeast of America. I hope that you have enjoyed my paper. Not all Native Americans are the same, like plains Indians have tipis and northeast Indians do not.
