Year of the Sketchbook

28 10 2009

At assembly, on October 15th, we were introduced to David Macaulay, Dalton’s Original Mind Scholar.

Each student brought their newly acquired  sketchbook and David walked us through a series of drawing exercises. The emphasis was on how drawing helps us explore and understand our world. David explained that there is no right way to keep a sketchbook and that there is no such thing as a wrong drawing. He also showed us one of his own which was filled with observational drawings, written notes , quick sketches and drawn ideas.

We have started off the Year of the Sketchbook by decorating the covers of our new blank books. There will be time for each student in Farnsworth House to free draw, respond to trips, poetry and books read aloud. We are looking forward to how the sketchbooks evolve and develop. Stay tuned!

Oral History Assignment due Oct.16

29 09 2009

We have been exploring different immigration stories through different picture books based on true stories. Why did they immigrate? What did it feel like to come to a new and unfamiliar country? What were their experiences? We have read about leaving family and friends behind, of not knowing the language, about making friends through sharing foods from the country of origin and other experiences.  Now it is the students turn to create a picture book about an immigrant’s experience.

Today we kicked off our Oral History Project with an overview of the steps involved. Your children will need your assistance with the first step which is to pick someone who has immigrated to the United States, who was old enough to remember the experience and is willing to talk in detail about the experience. They will also need your help in setting up a time and place for the interview.  It should be a location that is quiet and they will not be disturbed or interrupted.

What follows is a short film that gives an overview of the project.  It was produced by our associate teacher Mr. Andre.

Welcome Farnsworth House Class of 2018

13 09 2009

Welcome Farnsworth House Students and Families!

You have made it to Big Dalton. Some of you have traveled through First Program and some from other primary schools. You are bringing with you memories and experiences that make you a valuable and unique member of our community.

Farnsworth House, each year, is created a new with each new class. I count on you to enter with enthusiasm for learning and a desire to form a wonderful House. What makes a house wonderful? Of course, the love and enthusiasm for learning. But also, sometimes even more important, is making sure our actions come from a place of kindness and empathy for each other. We will be challenged in many ways but with these two fundamentals we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.

Here’s to a great year, a great adventure!

Congratulations New Citizens!
