Overall, our first two weeks of school were fun. Some of us felt that the first week was weird; the same kids but a different school. Our writing skills teacher is Mr. Andre who taught us science last year at Little Dalton. Ms. Kirsch is our spelling teacher. She was an associate for the 4th grade last year.
The first playstreet was only ten minutes, but we got to play many different games. The street is blocked off on the Lexington side, and if a car is coming out of its parking space, teachers yell, “Sidewalk!” and all of the kids run to the sidewalk and squat down. When the coast is clear, teachers yell,”Playstreet!” and everyone runs back into the street.
The first week of school we got our E.B. White books and started our author study. We have also recently begun our immigration study and oral history projects. We are looking at the different places from which people can come and why they might leave their country. We are gathering artifacts from Little Dalton to create a museum exhibit, which we will show our parents on Open House next week. It will be called The Museum of the Old Country.
We started our law studies with Dr. Stecher. The first time we met we received a copy of the constitution, and we used the distribution of pretzels to illustrate fairness. We also acted out two trials. One was about babysitter rights. In science we started a study of minerals.
Our science teacher is Ms. Jones. It is Ms. Jones’ first year at Big Dalton, too. In P.E. we are doing Project Adventure. Project adventure is a whole bunch of games that involve teamwork and teach you how to work together. In music we are all trying out different ways of making music because at the end of the year we will have to decide which instrument we want to play in fifth grade. In art classes, we made made black and white collages out of cut and ripped paper. Some people got to paint, too. Some of the kids are doing Kurt Schwitter-inspired collages. In library we took out some books and got our Bistro accounts. Finally, most of us can agree that the rule that we have to walk up to the 9th floor from Playstreet and P.E. is terrible. As you can see, most of us feel that Big Dalton is really fun.

This is our House banner over our door. It is the first thing we saw when we got to our classroom.
