One group of people came to this country from Africa against their will; they were enslaved. We will be reading and exploring this in a variety of ways. Our main focus will be on the story of the Amistad as seen through the eyes of one of the captives, Sarah Margru Kinson. The captives were from what is now the country of Sierra Leone where I was a Peace Corps Volunteer. Among many other activities you will read and respond to my story of Margru. You will also be reading poetry, writing your own, and creating collages related to them. We will then connect Africa to America by way of a study of the Gullah. Our study will end with a visit to the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan.
