Mourt’s Relation Illustrations

sophia.jpg

We’ve just finished reading a few pages of Mourt’s Relation, one of the primary sources about and by the original Mayflower passengers. We “translated” the old words and strange spelling to figure it all out. Then we each took a line or two and illustrated it. Now each student has scanned in his/her illustration, saved it, and then put it on his/her blog. That’s c15ss’s above (as her blog isn’t working right at the moment). Do check the other blogs out to see the kids’ Mourt illustrations. They are wonderful! (And remember that that the spelling is all exactly as it was in 1622!)

Cinderella Stories

Today you will (hurray — at last!) post your Cindy stories.

Go to the Edinger House Account, then to the Cindy folder where you will find a “readyforblogs” folder with all your stories inside.

Copy your story into a post. Be sure to give it a title!

Format if necessary.

Post!

Now go to at least three other blogs (we will randomly assign three of these in class), read those stories and comment on them.

Bon voyage to Blogical Minds!

Ms. Edinger and I have been looking for other student blogs for you to visit, and we found Blogical Minds from a fifth grade class in Georgia, USA.

1. Visit one of the of the student blogs at Blogical Minds.
2. While you are there, take notes about it in a MS word document. Can you answer these questions?

  • About what are they writing?
  • What kinds of things are you learning from their posts?
  • What are some examples of good writing and why?
  • In what ways is this student using their blog? Are these ways similar or different to how you use your blog right now?

Here are the notes we took this morning:

a post about current events, news
she asks a question at the end of the post
she added a picture

I learned that there are different ways to blog – you can learn from your mistakes on a blog
I learned a helpful safety tip from the animated “Awesome Owl”

a post to persuade people in the community not to cut down the trees to save the environment

3. Comment on a student’s blog post–see the post below for helpful ways to start a comment. You may get an idea from your notes, too.
4. Now return to this blog post and comment here so we can share what we learned. Use your notes and report on the most important thing you learned about blogging today. Remember to link to the blog that you visited.
(You may also post your comment on your blog.)

Comment Starters

We’ve talked some about commenting on others’ blogs, and you might find these “comment starters” helpful. I found them on the WebQuest, Blogging: It’s Elementary!.

Try them out when commenting on someone else’s blog:

I can relate to this…
This makes me think of…
I discovered…
I don’t understand…
I was reminded that…
I found myself wondering…

p.s. I found the link to this WebQuest at Blogical Minds.

Posting Possibilities

You are welcome to write posts on the following topics:

  • Reviews of books, movies, and plays.
  • Visits to other class blogs from the list on the right. (Give us a sense of what those classrooms are like. How are they similar or different from ours?)
  • Visits to any of the Alice sites I found. (Let us know what they are like. Do you recommend them? Why or why not?)
  • Response to any read-aloud. (For example, The Tale of Despereaux.)

A Very Special Literary Salon, 03/07/07

Today students recited their Amistad poems.

Afterwards, Natasha Trethewey, read and discussed some of her poems with the students.

On Tour

Some of us have been visiting other class blogs and reporting on these visits on our blogs. Hopefully more will soon! (And by the way, you need to do more than link to someone else’s blog — you need to report on your visit. That is, write about it as these students did. Just saying where you went and giving us a link is not enough. A hint to some of you.)
c15os visited Mr.Brune’s class near us in New York State

c15am has been all over the world!

c15hu has been to New Zealand already.

c15md visited Mr. Noon’s fourth grade in Alaska.

Now that we are well into Alice here are some fun sites for you to visit. You may do this during lab (after checking with me first, of course) or at home. Enjoy!
