Well this is my last Blog post for this blog. I might start my own blog at home. The blog thing was really fun. My favorite project for the blog was probably the…well I do not know most of them were really cool. I am going to miss doing a weekly blog post. Now that I think about it the blogs were kinda frustrating, but it was good thing to do. Evan if I do not make my own home blog I might have teacher that will let us make a blog. Well bye for now.
Today we had a Woz (Wizard of Oz) It was if the MGM movie was a good adaption of the book. I was chosen to argue that it was a good adaption of the book and I argee. My uncle is a hoolywood conposer. That means I now a lot about movies. I all so now that you can not add every detail from a book to a movie. All so moany is a big part. That movie was made in the thirtys so one doller then is five dollers now. People were angry that they were spending to much moany. So to add the poppys the witch of the south and more it would cost to much moany. All so time, it would take three hours to finish the the movie,, and who would want to watch a three hour Wizard of Oz. It Would be like the first two Harry Potters, Terrible. There would be to much unneeded stuff. Well that is what we did.
Vermont is a state we all know. It is known for maple syrup, the wilderness and lots of people with country houses. The capital of Vermont is Montperlier. The state fish is a brook trout and the walleye pike. The state animal is the Morgan horse. The state butterfly is the monarch butterfly. The state tree is the sugar maple (of course). The state flower is the Red Clover. The state drink is milk. Well here is some info on maple syrup.
What would be a pancake or a waffle without syrup? Believe it or not, most maple syrup comes from Vermont.Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the USA. Some of the brands in Vermont are Maple Grove Farms Vermont, Maple Sugarworks, Dakin Farm, Coutate’s Maple Syrup Shop, Sweet Retreat, Putham Family Farm and more. Vermont maple syrup is said to be the best in the USA. The maple syrup comes from a sugar maple, which is the state tree as I mentioned. Buckets are put on the trees to collect sap, and then you boil the sap and add sugar. Don’t try it at home, it probably won’t work. Maple syrup is awesome.
Dairy farming is an important part of Vermont life. The milk they use makes milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, butter and more. A famous Vermont ice cream maker is Ben and Jerry’s. Ben and Jerry’s started in Burlington Vermont, a shop in an old gas station. They started expanding through small stores in Vermont and then to other states until it became known through the USA. Vermont has 1386 cow dairy farms. You can visit one when you are there.
So if you didn’t have Vermont, you would be missing out on two yummy things: maple syrup and Ben and Jerry’s, or any other kind of dairy product.
Wow I did a lot since I last wrote about Alice. c17am and I have finished the pictures. We scanned them in and put them into Comic life. Then we added lines that were in the book. We also added some that were not in it but they are funny. It took us two weeks (I think) to get the comic finished. Then we had to print it out and make it into a poster, which is hanging outside the classroom. Yesterday we had a celebratory Tea Party. Everyone brought treats including cookies, muffins, scones, Tea and Hot chocolate. Overall it was a fun project.
My state was Virginia, I had to do research on Virginia. Here is what I came up with. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America, Jamestown was in what we now call Virginia. Jamestown was founded on May 13 1607. After it became a State in 1788 the Capitol changed three times, From Jamestown to Williamsburg and finally Richmond. The State Flower is Dogwood. The State beverage is Milk. Some of the major mountain ranges are the Allegheny, Appalachian, Blue Ridge and Shenandoah. In !995, the estimated population was 6,618,000. The area of Virginia is 40,81 square miles. 8 past presidents were born in Virginia including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson.
Virginia has a great history. One of the main historic things was the Civil War. Since the Civil War was a massive war I am just going to focus on The Battle of Williamsburg. The main part of The Battle of Williamsburg took place on May 5 1862. The other name was Fort Magruder. The Union had 40,768 troops, and the confedarets had 31,823 troops. The Confederates did not intend on defeating the union. They just wanted to stall them. The first attack was abandon because it was at night and they could not see. In the morning the battle started. There were countless volleys of bullets going across the field. Finally James longstreet (the Confederate general) decided that they could not hold the enemy for much longer. So Longstreet got every soldier he could and made a bayonet charge. Before the charge got three quarters across the field they were all killed. The battle of Williamsburg is one of the most famous battles ever.
George Washington was born in Westmoreland County Virginia. His family were landowners and that means that they had money. When he was 22 he fought in skirmishes that started the French and Indian War. After, he served in the House of Burgesses, the Virginian Government. In 1775, when he was 43 years old, he served in the Continental Congress as a Representative from Virginia. Later that same year, he became the General of the Continental Army. After he won the Revolution, the country elected him the first President of the United States.
That’s a little taste of the history of Virginia. Hopefully sometime you can go and see the things in Virginia. If you live in Virginia, that’s great for you.
Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me. Wow, this was a very good book. It is a mysterious book. As I said in the title you do not find out a thing till the end. It is also about friendship. There is also time travel in it. Rebecca Stead writes it so well, I mean I never thought that The Laughing Man was Marcus just older. That is probably the reason I love this book is because it is so mysterious. I also like how most chapters start with” Things that…: It is really cool. I like the metaphor of the veil and how Miranda’s comes of when her mom wins the $20,000 Pyramid. I think this book is good for kids. It entertained me a lot. I read First Light with my mom and this is a lot better then First Light. I am looking forward to reading Rebecca Stead’s next book.
Well I have not really done a single thing since I last did a post about Alice. Me and c17am scanned our pictures in so we are ahead of everyone. So I will tell you about how we are watching a movie named Dream Child, it is partly true. Here is the true part, when the real Alice was 80 she traveled to New York to get book award that was supposed to be given to Lewis Carroll but he was dead. So she go’s to America but she keeps remembering Lewis Carroll, but when she was young. There is a reporter who comes and tells Alice that if she go’s on this radio show that she can get lots of money. Than a ton of little stuff happens but that is not part of the Alice part. Then she go’s to the university and makes a speech. Well that is the basic story. (You should see the movie)
The pilgrims were a bit similar to the people of shine. I mean they both had poor living conditions on the trip. Here is a different thing about them both. The Shine people came on a spaceship and the trip took 4 years and the Pilgrims came on a boat and it took 66 days. But when they both first came to there destination it was hard to live but they figured it out. There is a difference, later on the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims, the Moth People did not help the Shine people. But there is something else similar if it was not for the Candy Trees and the wheat the Shine people would die and The Pilgrims, if it was not for corn they would die to. But there is a difference after Sqanto showed The Pilgrims how to grow corn they had no problem but the Shine people had a lot of trouble with the wheat. There are tons of things that are the same and that are different but will not say all of them because there are tons.
