Margru Story

My teacher, Ms. Edinger wrote a book about Sarah Margru Kinson. She was on the Amistad during the slave revolt. I liked the story because it really sounded like what would have happened during that time. The name of the story is Africa is my home. I really got a feel of what it was like back then. To be a slave in an unfriendly world. All though no one knew back then, I think this story has a lot of examples of what it would have been like. It must have been scary to be on a boat treated as a slave, not to mention when your a child. This story is a bit scary but it has the right amount of happiness to be a good story. I think this book expresses what things would have been like at that time, especially the way she writes Margru’s thoughts. This is a good book and  I  bet it will  get published.  Good  luck  Ms.  Edinger!

Elizabeth Alexander

On Friday, 2/6/09, Elizabeth Alexander the poet came to Dalton to talk about and read some of her poetry. She talked mostly about the Amistad and slavery because that’s what we’re studying in school. She also talked about Ms. Crandall and her school for female African Americans. Ms. Crandall was a white woman who thought African Americans at that time should get better education. So she started a school even though the rest of the town were against the idea, and started teaching African American girls. The rest of the town really hated this idea so first they stopped anyone from delivering supplies or food to the school. Ms. Crandall kept teaching. Then the town poisoned the school well. Ms. Crandall kept on teaching. Then the town killed the school cat. Ms. Crandall kept on teaching. Finally, the town burned down the school. Then Ms. Crandall had to give up, and she left town. I think Ms. Crandall was brave in standing up to the town like that. I know I couldn’t have done it

Oliver Review

In this post, I will be reviewing the musical Oliver Twist. I was interested to know that Oliver is usually played by a girl because Oliver has a high pitched voice. I don’t usually watch Oliver, but when I do, I like the singing best. Every year, The Dalton School has a play. This year, the play was Oliver. c17sp’s brother played Bill Sights. Like I said, I like the singing best but the acting was also pretty good. I haven’t seen the play for a while, so I didn’t exactly know what was going to happen, which was a good thing. I would definitely recommend this play but it closes 1/29/09. I just hope next year’s play is just as good!

IT’S AN OBAMA DAY!

On 1/20/09 at 12:05, president Barack Obama took an oath that made him president of the United Sates of America. What was really interesting is that during the oath, Obama forgot a few words and stumbled with a few others. I don’t think that’s ever happened in the history of presidents. The man who gave Obama the words to the oath was the head judge of the supreme court. At the end of the oath it is optional to say “So help me god.”, but the head of the supreme court said to Obama “So help YOU god?”, instead of “So help me god.”

My favorite part of the event was the speech. I liked the tone of voice Obama said it in, I like the choice of words, but I must admit it was a little long. I also liked the part where they introduced former presidents. I noticed that Bush got no applause. and When Obama became president, my friends basically had a catch throwing me around. I really hope Obama can make America a country we can respect again. Well, I’m looking forward to at least four great years!

Cheryl Clark came from Trinidad in 1981, on a vacation. She flew on a plane alone. All of her friends talked about America so she gave it a try. She left her close family behind in Trinidad but came to her outer family in Brooklyn. What made her stay is that she went to all kinds of parties. When she first came here she was frozen to the bone, but her body has adapted to the weather by now. I thought this was an interesting story because she was forced here not by famines, but by her friends. But in a friendly way.

Getting Started

This is my first blog post! I was just looking at someone’s blog from last year, and it was interesting. This is really going to help me get started. I noticed that the one of the first posts was really long. I think I should start off doing little events and then get into the big ones. I must be dreaming. I just can’t believe I have my very own blog! This may be hard, but I think I can do it!
