The Tempest
Last Thursday, I saw a musical play called The Tempest by Shakespeare. I am the kind of person who has a hard time criticizing but here I go. I really think the actors and actresses really pulled it off. I really do think that they must have practiced a whole lot and believe me. I know about these things. I don’t love all the ’tis and ‘thus and that stuff but that is Shakespeare, not the students. Anyway, it was acted out by some very good Middle Schoolers at the Dalton School

Hi,
My name is Arlo and I am the High School Technologist (computer guy) for Dalton. Ms. Edinger and I have worked together for years.
I was unable to see the Tempest at Dalton, but I enjoyed reading your review. If you were directing the Tempest for Dalton would you use the original language of Shakespeare, or would you put the play in modern language?

Hey- thanks for your comments. I think Arlo asks a pertinent question. I as the director took a show that updated the language with the songs and returned to Shakespeare’s original text. Though it can be difficult with all the ’tises and ‘thous, I think the language is beautiful and worth the extra effort to understand. Don’t worry. Keep at it. It gets easier!

Arlo, I really would not use the shakespear script but these actors were really great. I really enjoyed it anyway. Mr. G, U R the director? You must of done a lot of work. Yes I do agree that the language is beautiful, though. I hope it gets easier and I can tell that it will. I am glad u liked the review!
Tootles u guys

If you were able to understand what was happening in the play without completely understanding the language, then that shows that the director and the actors did a good job. Shakespeare can be hard to understand but good acting is always easy to understand! I’ve performed some Shakespeare before and you have the added job of making sure the audience can “see” what you’re saying even if they can’t completely understand it. Its challenging but fun!
