We have been working on Cinderella stories. I wrote a story about a girl who broke her leg. I wanted to write about this girl because this year I broke my leg and I wanted to make people see what it feels to be in a wheel chair. Why stare at someone in a wheel chair on the street? They’re just like you inside so I hope next time you see someone in a wheel chair or walker or even on crotches just think to yourself “Maybe it would hurt their feelings if I stare.” So just think about it.
Broken Melissa
Mr. Cinders was very pleased, he loved his daughter ever so much but soon she was going to be 16 and he was getting older and it might be time for him to get another wife. Mr. Cinders wife died when Melissa was 10. It was very tragic but they had to move on in life. Melissa was extremely happy today. It was the Ice Skating Party. Melissa was very good at ice skating. It was her specialty. “I better get ready dad. I’ll be in my room if you need me!” Melissa screeched. She was worried that she was going to be late. Melissa put on a red skating skirt and a black fleece. Melissa came to the kitchen. She looked very beautiful. Mr. Cinders loved seeing Melissa ice-skating so he decided to come to the party.
Melissa ran to a stool and put on her ice skates. Amy, her best friend, saw Melissa and they walked to the rink. Amy and Melissa got on to the ice. “UH OH,” Amy whispered softly. Then Melissa knew this was going to be bad.
“UH OH is right,” said Stacey, Amber and Ashley nodding their heads. They agreed with everything Stacey says.
“Don’t worry Am, nothing’s gonna happen” pleaded Melissa.
“I gonna stay here Mel, just for safety.” replied Amy.
Mr. Cinders watched Amy and Melissa talk and saw Melissa go on skating and Amy go back to take off her skates. Melissa skated and skated but then a big thud hit the ground.
“Oh sorry, I didn’t mea…” started Melissa.
“Oh its okay my fault. So my name’s Justin…and you are?”
“Melissa.”
“Melissa is a nice name,” and then he zoomed off in a flash.
Melissa looked surprised. The cutest guy in school was talking to her.
Then Stacey came over. “What are you doing talking to my boyfriend!?” She pushed Melissa to the ground. What could a little fall do? Melissa thought. But when Melissa hit the ground she burst into tears.
“Melissa!” Amy screeched and jumped on the ice for she didn’t take her ice skates off. Mr. Cinders took a sip of his coffee and saw Melissa on the ground flooding the place with tears.
“Sweetheart what happened?” asked Mr. Cinders terrified. Melissa tried to find the words for the answer but all she could tell her father was that she was in a lot of pain.
“My leg, my leg, please help me dad, please!” Melissa tried to talk over her tears but it was too hard. Right at that very moment two men came and picked her up.
The two men took off the skate and examined it. “Don’t worry sweetie, it’s just a sprained ankle,” said the infirmary man.
“Dad, is there an ambulance coming?” asked Melissa in a stumbled voice. Mr. Cinders didn’t answer. He was worried he was going to lose his daughter.
Melissa fell asleep waiting and woke up almost at the hospital. “Okay doctor this is what I want to do: 1. I want to find out what wrong with her and 2. I want to get what she needs and leave,” exclaimed Mr. Cinders. He was very aggravated with what happened. So Melissa took a ton of x-ray’s.
“My leg,” moaned Melissa.
“There is good news and bad news,” started the doctor. “Good news is it’s nothing that seri…”
Mr. Cinders turned bright red. “Nothing that serious! NOTHING THAT SERIOUS!”
The doctor looked as if a ghost came by, “As I was saying, the bad news is she broke her leg. Don’t get mad, its just a clean break, no surgery just a cast,” exclaimed the doctor. Mr. Cinders looked relieved. Melissa got her cast and went home and went to sleep. She had an exhausting day.
Melissa woke up to the face of her father. “Dad, I had the strangest dream last night,“ she started.
“What was your dream sweetheart?” asked Mr. Cinders.
“My dream was that I broke my leg at the ice skating party last night,” said Melissa. Melissa took her blanket and screamed, “Dad, why is there a big block of plaster on my leg?” Melissa began to cry.
“Well, Melissa honey, I don’t know how to say it but you broke your leg,” Mr. Cinders said softly. Mr. Cinders hated to see Melissa cry. Melissa just couldn’t stand it she just couldn’t. She missed her mom more than ever. Melissa didn’t want her stuff she wanted her.
Mr. Cinder allowed Melissa to stay home from school so she stayed home and watched any thing she could find on T.V. She also looked at pictures of her mother and then she had an idea. But her father would never take her to the cemetery. It was all the way in Chicago. “Dad life is fair and unfair but my life is nothing but unfair,” said Melissa almost into tears.
“No it’s not,” said Mr. Cinders. He was trying to make his daughter feel better even though it was true.
“Yes it is true daddy. First mom dies, then I brake my leg and then your are going to have to pay about a thousand dollars for the doctor appointments. What next?” Melissa was now crying so hard that she got a headache. Melissa went to bed trying to clear her mind.
Melissa just didn’t want to go to school tomorrow, she just didn’t want to. Right that second she fell asleep. The next day was really hard. Melissa was treated differently just because she had a cast. Everyone but Amy and Justin made her get stuff off the ground and was mean to her, especially Stacey.
“MELISSA hold my bags and be a nice girl and get me some water,” Stacey shrieked.
Three months later Melissa was about to get her boot off she was so excited when suddenly her smile fell, the color in her face drained and she had a pit in her stomach. “Th-th-the skating com…” Melissa could hardly speak.
“…petition” Amy shouted. Melissa glared at her. Amy knew she had done something wrong.
“Amy!”
“What did I do?”
“Oh, nothing but make my feel bad about the competition!”
“Sorry,” said Amy, as quiet as a mouse.
“It’s not your fault, okay? I just overreacted, really it’s not,” said Melissa, upset that she yelled at her best friend.
Melissa went outside to see her dad and go to the doctor’s office but where could he be. “Oh Melissa I was looking all over for you, now lets go to the doctors office,” said Mr. Cinders.
So they went the doctor’s office and got her boot off. “Doctor can I ice skate cause the skat…”
“Yes you can, Melissa,” interrupted the doctor.
It was the day of the skating competition. Melissa was nervous. “What if I break my leg again?” Melissa faced her fears and put her skates on slowly.
“Next up Melissa Cinders” the speakers rang. Melissa stumbled on to the ice. She had no routine, no nothing she just had to go with flow. “Wow Melissa started with a triple axel amazing and now she’s doing the Mohawk lovely,” ringed the speakers. Melissa ended with a split. She was terrific and Justin fell in love with her by every second.
The minute she finished Stacey got on and Melissa zoomed off the ice and her skate fell off.
Justin screeched, “Wait! Your ice skate,” but she was gone.
The next day Justin made an announcement at school. “Who ever this ice skate fits I will go out with.” Every girl went in line of course but none of them was Melissa because she was out that day.
A week later Melissa and Justin were talking right before the bell. “Melissa, I know this sounds stupid but will you try on this ice skate?” asked Justin. You see, Justin had always liked Melissa.
“Sure” replied Melissa. The skate slid on to her foot and it was a perfect fit. Justin’s heart leaped for joy.
“Melissa, I know this is stupid, but I promised whoever this skate fit I’d go out with,” said Justin.
“OK, but sure,” said Melissa. Then Justin kissed her on the cheek.
“Justin! What are you doing?” it was Stacey.
“Stacey, meet my new girlfriend.”
A big shriek came over the school. “What! Justin! We just broke up yesterday and you’re seeing other people already!?” said Stacey. Then she stomped away.
Twenty years later Melissa is now married to Justin and they have two kids and a great story about how they met. And just like how every story ends, they lived happily ever after. Now, my friend, that is the story of “Broken Melissa.”
