Time Traveling With Taggot
Literary time! Last Friday we (my class and I) read the Newbery Winner Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! By Laura Amy Schlitz. We had read it before but now we read it in parts! (Each of us picked a chapter and read a part.) My teacher was on the Newbery committee and thought we should do this. My class was really excited! mm even memorized it! I chose Taggot, the blacksmith’s daughter. Listen to it! Pretty please with sugar on top!

I picked this one to try first! And I’m so glad. I love the way you read it so calmly as though you were glad to be Taggot! It was great to hear the wonderful words read aloud. Thanks, Carol

I wonder why you chose Taggot. It seems to me that she is a person who might wish for more, but is wise enough to appreciate what she has, a family that cares for her, and wise enough to know what she is, a good and sensitive person. I haven’t yet had a chance to read Ms. Schlitz’z book, so thank you for reading this for me.

You read that poem beautifully. Taggot is very caring, and this is apparent in the way that she is so sensitive towards the horses. But she also drives me a little nuts! I wish she felt better about herself and instead of resigning herself to her family’s perceptions of her, that she would work to make her own dreams come true. She is such an interesting character because she seems at once to be very strong and independent, and yet sad and powerless. What do you think?
