“This is it, Selena!” my Dad said, “How do you like it?”
“It’s cool, fine,” I said not meaning it. We had just moved. I was 13 and had lived in Tennessee until my Dad’s company transferred him to L.A. My mom died when I was born, so bye-bye Mommy!
“Go pick your room,” my Dad said tossing me the key. I ended up picking the biggest room with the best view and my own bathroom! Maybe this wouldn’t be so hard!
*******
Everything was going great, I even made a new friend named Ally, and until the day everything changed.
“I am not going to the wedding!” I said brushing my long copper hair.
“Yes you are! And no other buts out of you,” my Dad said. I had taught him well… maybe too well because I ended up going to the wedding. It was final. He was marring this witch named Rianna. Rianna is like a Barbie doll so you can get the picture.
TWO YEARS LATER
“SELENA! SE-LEN-A! I NEED SOME CANDLES!” Muffy, Rianna’s daughter, screamed.
“Shut up!” shouted Cody, Rianna’s son. I sighed. This is how Cinderella must have felt. Soon after the wedding my Dad died so I was left with Rianna, Muffy, Buffy and Cody. Muffy, Buffy and Rianna were taking advantage of my niceness and made me do all the chores. Cody was much nicer than them. In fact I liked him. Halloween was coming up, what would I be?
*******
“I’m going to be Cinderella for Halloween!” I exclaimed while later calling Ally.
“Perfect Selena! I’m being a black cat!” Ally said, going on and on about details.
“’Kay got to go!” I said, hanging up without letting her answer.
*******
“Look over there. The coolest guys in school! Everyone wants to dance with them at the Halloween Dance, especially that one,” Ally said the next day at lunch. She was waving to Dylan Dirkton. He was so the coolest guy in school with his brown hair, blue eyes and big white smile.
“Yeah but he is so going with Brittany,” I said, nodding toward the popular table. Brittany Penner was the most popular girl in school; mean, selfish and rich. She was the perfect mean girl.
“I don’t get how he puts up with it,” she said, “let’s go sit down.”
*******
The day of the Halloween Dance I was fixing Rianna’s favorite pink dress when Cody walked into the room.
“Hey, why are you here and not at the Halloween Dance?” Cody asked.
“Well I was going to be Cinderella but Muffy and Buffy would kill me!” I sighed.
“That’s Muffy and Buffy you’re talking about! What would you’re Dad or Mom say?” Cody asked.
“He would say ‘Why are you here?’” I whispered. We ended up getting a mask, jewelry and glass slippers at the costume store and Cody went to get a dress from Rianna’s room.
“This was one looks like a Cinderella dress. Try it on!” Cody said smiling. The dress fit, I put on the stuff we got at the costume store, some makeup and put my long copper hair into a bun.

When I got to the gym steps, I saw Ally was dressed as a black cat.
“Selena! Dylan and Brittany broke up!” Ally smiled.
“NO!” I said really, truly surprised.
“Yes! Now you can show him who he really deserves.”
She escorted me down the steps. The gym was silent (I later found out it was because I was so beautiful) until someone shouted, “Hey Cinderella, want to dance?” and the party went on.
“Cinderella, would you like to dance?” a gentle voice asked behind me; it was Dylan.
“Sure!” I said trying not to sound excited. He grabbed me and we started dancing.
“It’s really noisy in here!” I shouted above the music as I twirled.
“Yeah! Let’s go onto the running track,” he said calmly.
“Those eyes, that hair, that smile; you think I’d remember that from school,” he said staring at me.
“Maybe not, I’ve been at this school for two years and you’d be surprised at who I am at school.” I said grinning.
“Would you like to dance?” he asked.
“But there’s no music!” I said.
“So? Does that really matter?”
We danced the rest of the night, Dylan making me laugh by telling me how he got good grades and his friends called him a nerd until….“Cinderella! It’s midnight!” Ally called.
“This has been so great but I have to go.” And unfortunately, it’s hard to run in plastic heels so he caught up.
“I really have to go!” I said wiggling away.
“What’s your name?” he asked, getting one of my matching necklaces.
“Selena.” And I left. Cody grabbed me in the car and drove home.
*******
“Selena, what are you doing?” Muffy asked when she arrived, 2 minutes after I got home.
“Fixing Rianna’s dress, what else?” I asked, panting from behind the kitchen counter.
“Hmmm, very well, goodnight Selena.” And she walked out the door, Buffy following her.
Right before she walked out the door she said, “There was a pretty girl there with a dress that looked like Mother’s.”
“I heard Dylan is having a search party. Too bad you missed it!” and with that she left. I sighed and smiled.
“That was a close call!” I said, taking off my shirt with Cody’s dress right underneath! I went to bed, exhausted, dreaming of Dylan and the track.
*******
In school the next day, Dylan was at a table trying on the necklace asking if they had the other one, just like Buffy said.
“Go Selena! He’ll know it’s you!” Ally said pushing me in line. I touched my necklace.
“Do you have the necklace?” he asked me.
“Yes,” I breathed and took it off.
“Selena…” he said puzzled.
“Yes, I’m Selena Combie, and now you know it’s me so you can find another girl. How ‘bout Muffy my stepsister? She’s pretty. Or…” I said trying to hide my disappointment.
“Why? Because I have found the girl I’m looking for,” he interrupted me. I was so happy. Dreams do come true.
