Dalton School
In New York the Dalton school fourth grade students in Edinger house studied forced immigration. Forced immigration is slavery. We studied about Africans being forced to come to America.
Their teacher, Monica Edinger, read some books to them about slavery, like the book Amistad Rising or The Village that Vanished. She showed them her book Africa Is My Home about Margru a slave that was on the Amistad. The Amistad was a ship that carried slaves. They wrote writing pieces about Margru and posted them on their blogs. A poet Natasha Trethewey wrote a poem with them, and then they each got to write a poem on the Amistad.
A fellow classmate brought in some artifacts from Mali, a
country in Africa so they could see it for themselves and learn more. Also, Monica Edinger brought in some artifacts from Sierra Leone. Forced immigration is a good thing to study about and they are very lucky that they got to study about it.
