Behind the Moutains by Edwidge Danticat is a fantastic historical fiction book, written as a journal with all the dates and days. It is about girl, Cece that lives in Haiti and her father lives in New York. Edwidge Danticat uses great description to explain the bombings and shootings going on during an election in Haiti; there has not been one in thirty years. She also describes life in Haiti very well. For example, when her father was in Haiti he and his son took rain baths. They soaped themselves and ran out in the rain for showers. One time it was more than rain — “ the pieces of hail were the size of rice grains.“(Page 21) Another example of Edwidge Danticat’s great description is something she wrote while on her first plane ride and the things that she would of missed — “The rise, going up, up, up from the ground and floating up in the air, as though inside a bird.” (Page 82) Another great part is when she describes her friend Therese laughing with “her hands waving wildly in the air as though they were dancing.” (Page 22) For these reasons and more this book is an amazing historical fiction book.

This book is about my grandmother. She came from Canada and she immigrated in 1941 when she was only six. She came in the beginning of World War II and she spoke no English, only French and Lithuanian, but she ends up learning English in first grade. Her Uncle already lived in America. Now she lives in Massachusetts in Hingham.
