Reflections on this year

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15hu at 8:37 am on Monday, June 11, 2007

The blog was really fun for me. I liked it because it was fun to write down what we are learning about and getting to share with the class in the beginning of the year. In the beginning of the year, we did not have the blogs public so we could only share it with our class but now we can share it to the world. I would like to continue but I would rather only write about book reviews because I like telling other people which books I like and which ones I do not like.

This year we did posts on a lot of this such as Mourts Relation, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard Of Oz and a lot more. If you go further down on the page you will see all of the posts that I wrote.

I hope that you enjoyed reading the blog posts that I wrote this year.

Wizard of Oz: Comparing the book from the movie.

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15hu at 9:29 am on Thursday, May 31, 2007

Our class is studying the Wizard of Oz and we read the book. We recently saw the movie. We had a certain amount of time so we really got to get a lot out of the book. We saw the movie and there are so many differences and I would like to share with you what they are.

First of all, in the movie, it ends up being a dream but in the book it is not and I do not like that in the movie they made it a dream because it is to much not like the movie. I do not think it is a good adaptation. I do believe that it is a good movie even thought I liked the book a lot more than the movie. I think that it is a good movie because it is very entertaining to watch. I like in the movie how in the beginning the setting is in black and white, but then when they get to the Wonderful Land of Oz it turns very colorful. At the end when it is a dream and she wakes up the setting is back to black and white.

I also think that it is not a good adaptation because the person that plays Dorothy is way too old. She is also very tall. Also, the movie does sound a little like the book but it leaves out so much that it is not as good as it would be if they added a little bit more of the book.  For example, in the movie the slippers are ruby red and in the book they are white.

If you did not read Wizard of Oz, I suggest that you read it and read the rest of the series. The next book is called The Marvelous Land of Oz. You might want to compare it with the movie if you want to see it. You should read the book before the movie. I hope you do.

Plimoth Plantation

Plimoth Plantation

In about a week we are going to Plimoth Plantation in Cape Cod. You may be wondering why we are going to Plimouth out of all the other places but we are going because in school we are learning about the pilgrims. It is related to the pilgrims because Plimoth Plantation is where the pilgrims landed off of the Mayflower in 1620. I think that Plimoth will be interesting and fun because we (meaning my grade) will learn so much more than we already know. I am so excited to learn double what we know and we can have a fun time doing it.
From when I come back from Plimoth Plantion I will add on what I thought differently or the same.

Forced Immigration

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15hu at 9:41 am on Thursday, April 12, 2007

Edinger House in The Dalton School on 89th St. studied about forced immigration. The reason they studied about forced immigration is because if you want an education then you have to learn about history, and forced immigration, or slavery, is an important part of American history.  Slavery is part of the Dalton schools 4th grade immigration curriculum. They didn’t study about forced immigration for a long amount of time, but it was just enough that Edinger House could be experts.
A kid in our class brought in objects from Mali, Africa including a cloth, clothes statue, beads, instruments, African money and necklaces. Edinger House also had an advantage because their teacher spent some time in Sierra Leone. Their teacher made a slideshow of pictures from Africa so they had a little better idea of what they were talking about.
The teacher of Edinger House also wrote a book that is not out yet and the class got to read it. That book is about a real life girl named Sarah Margru Kinson who was on the Amistad. When the class read it they took notes and that is what made them really an expert with it. There teacher also read a book of them called Amistad Rising. That book was really helpful to Edinger House.
A different kid in the class gave a quote to me which was “The entire study of forced immigration helped me learn a lot.” That quote could really be nice thing to there teacher. From all of this the class has had fun with this unit.

The Real Story of Ella

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15hu at 8:36 am on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

So once upon a time in a fantasy land there lived a girl named Ella. Ella had beautiful brown hair, beautiful brown eyes, was very polite, and had everything you want in a person. She had a fabulous father named Robby and she had a marvelous mother named Julia. Robby, Julia, and Ella were as happy as they could be.

Ella’s room was so amazing that you could not tell if it was a room or a five-story house. What I mean is that her room had everything in it that not even rich people (besides her) could afford a house like it. Her house was in New York City and her house was more than five stories. Her parents were the most famous people in the world. Robby was the weatherman on channel 2 and Julia was in Ella’s favorite T.V. show My Favorite Actresses.

Ella was a very happy girl and was very nice to all of her friends because she never ever told a lie about them. She also never told other people that her friends were stupid, mean, or a bad friend. If they had a secret that they told, she would never tell anyone else. Also her favorite hobbies were reading, writing and playing sports.

So after one full year of acting you have to start traveling a lot. Ella didn’t know that and she was having so much fun with her parents that she never wanted them to leave and to be away for over a week.

So one day Julia said, “Ella, will you come here?”

“Sure mom. For what reason?” asked Ella strangely.

“Your father and I have to go away. I have to go to California and your father has to go to a place where he does his research for the whole year so he can be home more often and then he will only have to do it on the T.V.,” said Julia.

“I bet that will be a lot harder because he will not know the weather there,” said Ella

“It sure will be except that it will pay triple,” said Julia.

Ella was so upset. Ella said, “Who is going to take care of me?”

Julia said, “We hired a babysitter named Liz.”

So the next day Liz came to the door and Julia thought that there was not a babysitter in the whole land that could be better. She was very much wrong. So Julia gave Ella the best kiss and hug in the world. Robby’s was second best. When she was hugging she would not let go because she did not want them to go.

So the next day they were gone, Ella would not even look at Liz. She was crying so much she could not even open her eyes. She cried all day and all night. I think that you can get the picture of how upset she was.

Liz was always making Ella upset. She would say things that were not true. Then the next day Liz told Ella that her parents were never coming home. She pretended that she was on the phone with her parents to say that.

Ella thought that there was a way to contact them to see if she were telling the truth. Ella thought of calling them, but Liz was the only one with the phone number. She thought and thought until she finally remembered that there was a doorman down stairs. His name was Nathan. Now Nathan was a really nice guy and he always agreed to what Ella had said since he had known her for her whole life. She would always talk to Nathan when she had a chance to. So that night Ella remembered that she had to take out the garbage and she was really happy about that because she could write a letter to him and pretend that she was throwing it away. She would wink at him so he knew that she something was up. That night she wrote a letter to him and it was this:

September 20, 2007

Dear Nathan,

Right now I am stuck with this really mean babysitter. I really don’t like her and I have to contact my mom because she was on the phone with my mom and said that she does not want me anymore. I do not believe her. She is the only one with the phone so I am asking you to call her and ask her for me. If you do not get it I will be in trouble. Please work.
From,
Ella.
By the way, Ella had left this right by the garbage so that he would know to contact her mother. (Her father too.)

The next day Nathan looked at the trash early in the morning before anyone woke up because the day before he had seen Ella give him a wink and so he knew that something was up. Since he saw that he went to the garbage to see if anything was happening in there. I know that sounds kind of strange but that is what he did. Anyway he read the letter that Ella had wrote to him and he was very glad to help her. Luckily, he had his cell phone with him to do it right away.

“Hello?” said Julia picking up the phone.

“Hi Julia. This is Nathan.”

“Why are you calling me Nathan? I don’t want to be mean except I was only expecting either Liz the babysitter to call me or Ella,” said Julia.

“But this is an emergency,” said Nathan.

“Okay. What is it?” asked Julia

“Liz was really fooling you if you thought that she was the best babysitter in the world. You’re going the wrong way with that. She is super mean. Ella is not allowed to call you or write a letter to you. She said that Liz said that you guys were never coming home. Is that true?” asked Nathan with him almost out of breath.

“Of course not. We love her,” said Julia shocked.

“Then you better come home fast because sh-,” Nathan said without getting to finish his sentence. Obviously, she hung up right away.Later that day Julia told Robby that Liz was mean and he started to pack his things.

Also later that day Nathan came to Ella’s apartment and knocked on the door and asked Liz if he could speak to Ella. Nathan had told Ella that he had contacted her mom. Ella was super happy because she knew that her parents would come home right away.

Guess what? They did. Ella’s mom and dad came to Ella except not at the same time. Her dad came an hour later. Ella came up to her parents and gave them a really big kiss and hug. They fired Liz as soon as they got home.

Then after Liz left, Ella was alone with her parents and she was really happy except that she did not feel right about it. She thought that you would want them to go but in a way Ella kind of wanted her to stay. Wait, no she didn’t. She was extra happy that it was like it used to be. She would go with her parents everywhere they went until she got older.

So Ella was a happy girl and she went to the park with her parents. She went to get ice cream with her parents and so much more. Ella thought that since her parents said that they would never leave her with someone she does not like again. Do you think so? Well, they didn’t. The same thing happened over and over but they stopped by the tenth time. I think that you would want to be her for some part but not all. I would want them to be with me all the time. She was a very lucky girl for most of the time. She actually was very happy and as she got older she started to change because that she wasn’t with her parents for most of the time. She started to hang out with friends more but inside she was always Robby and Julia’s little girl.

Visiting New Zealand

Today I went and visited Crystal’s blog on a New Zealand blog. She was writing about herself and she wrote that she liked animals. Since she was writing about herself I commented and said that she should be careful about what she says about herself.

Africa is my home

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15hu at 11:55 am on Wednesday, February 28, 2007

Africa is my Home is a great book written by Monica Edinger a.k.a. my teacher. Africa is my Home is not a published book but it will soon be. (Maybe) So any way, Africa is my Home is a historical fiction book about Sarah Margru Kinson. The images are some from newspapers, black and white, color and portraits. The newspapers are interesting and the black and white pictures are helpful to the story. All of the pictures are nice and Monica Edinger took a lot of time picking them out. I learned a lot about Margru and all the other girls on the Amistad. It was very interesting. One of the examples of why it was interesting is that it gives exact dates of when everything happens. Another thing is that Margru is scared of white ghosts. White ghosts in this case are white men because she has never seen any person with white skin color before. This is a part that is a fictional part. So when Africa is my Home is available you should read it.

Me.
A young girl
living with her mother,
her elder brother,
her sister.
My poor father was dead.

Me.
The one who never could see her mother again
because some people
killed her.

Me.
The one
taken
together with some other girls.

Me.
The one
who was sad
because she could never be
with her parents ever again.
That was the worst feeling she had there.

Me.
A sad little girl
who had to work through her life
with terrible things happening to her.
She was the one that had to be by herself
besides her sister and brother.

Me.
The one who was not
going to be happy again.
