The Wizard of Oz
“The Wizard of Oz” MGM movie is good, but not a very good adaptation of the book. It has too many differences. For example, the Wicked Witch of the West pops up too many times when she isn’t supposed to. Also, in the movie, the Land of Oz is just a dream.
In the book, Dorothy goes on a magical adventure in the Land of Oz, where her house landed after a cyclone. There she is told to follow the yellow brick road by a fairy named Glinda. She starts her journey and meets a few friends. She then sees a poppy-field, and goes through. But the poppy field makes her go to sleep, so field mice (that the Tin Woodsman, one of Dorothy’s friends, helped) helped Dorothy. After that they have a safe passage to the wizard, and have to kill the wicked witch to get what they want from the wizard. So, eventually they kill the witch, the wizard is actually a fake, and Dorothy and the others “get what they want.”
In the movie, it’s totally different. Dorothy lives in a village where there is an evil woman named Ms. Gulch. Then Dorothy runs away because she hates rich old Ms. Gulch. THEN she comes back and the cyclone starts. After it’s pretty much the same, except the witch of the west comes up too much, etc.
The reason I actually like the MGM movie version is that it is creative and funny. For example, when Toto discovers the humbug wizard, the wizard says, “Don’t pay any attention to the man behind the curtain.” But still I don’t think it’s a very good adaptation.
