Vistiting Other Blogs

Today we all went to other student blogs. I went to a blog called Emily’s Corner. I thought that it was really cool because I got lots of different kinds of ideas that I could write about. If you go to Edinger House blog you can see my comment about it too. The blog that I went to had animations that gave you tips, which I thought was really cool. There were also podcasts that were cool. I think that the coolest of all was when the person talked about what they though that the school should do.

Home is Nowhere

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15ck at 12:17 pm on Friday, February 23, 2007

In class we wrote poems about a person that was taken from Africa to be a slave. This is my poem:

My mother, brother, sister all here with me
Something’s missing
My dead father not here to protect us from the bad people that come to my land

Everything is calm sleeping is my warm bed
I hear something
It is not right

The sound of footsteps crossing the dirt floor
My family tries to hide but we don’t succeed
The man takes me out side where it is pitch black
I barely see my family being torn away from me

A tear stained my face
No more family
No more playing
No more love
No more home
No more Africa

Who are these people and what are they doing to my family I wondered
I am scared

The men give me to
Ghosts
White ghosts
I had never seen anyone like them before
Where they good?
No they weren’t

But still I believe that I will come home

Some day
Someday I will come home

Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out Of A Tree

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15ck at 12:27 pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out Of A Tree is a great book by Lauren Tarshis. The book is not for sale yet but when it is every one is going to love it, I can tell. I read it because my teacher Mrs. Edinger had a copy of the book and at first I did not know that I really wanted to read it but now I think that it is a really good and realistic. It is about a girl named Emma-Jean. She loves to be organized and to help her friends and teachers when they need help. For example she helps this girl named Colleen because she thinks that her best friend is not her friend anymore because of a really mean girl named Laura Gilroy. But even though she is very nice everyone in school thinks that Emma-Jean is strange. Emma-Jean’s father died when Emma-Jean was younger. She and her mother are going through a tough time and Emma-Jean is fine. Or not. This book is really good because it is a pretty fast read and has about one hundred and fifty pages. If you see this book than you should definitely read it even if you think that you will not like it!

Sarah Margru Kinson’s Journey To The White Man’s Land

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15ck at 10:52 am on Friday, February 16, 2007

Africa Is My Home is a great historical fiction book by Monica Edinger, my teacher. She is still writing the book and she allowed us to read it and make comments such as saying that we found lots of facts of historical fiction and literary elements. The book is about a girl that is black and her name is Sarah Margru Kinson. Sarah is taken to America to be a slave when she is just a kid and she really misses home in Africa. But she does not know if she will ever see her homeland again. In the book Margru says “Very few people ever went home. Sarah Margru Kinson did.” I thought that that sentence was very good because it made you think about all of the captives that went to America and how Sara was so lucky that she got to go home. There are really good descriptions such as when Sarah describes the white men that captured them as “white ghosts.” And there are historical facts too, such as when they go on to trial in the Supreme Court. I think that when this book comes out, then anyone that reads it will love it and think that it is surprising, exciting and very emotional.

NOLA Buddies

Filed under: Uncategorized — c15ck at 10:19 am on Wednesday, February 14, 2007

I am writing this blog post with my third grade buddy. She will tell you about their third grade NOLA buddies. NOLA stands for New Orleans Louisiana.

Our NOLA buddies are special to us because even though we are far away from each other we are very good friends. With my buddies D and J we talk about the curriculum and social things such as what we are studying in math and social studies. We send each other things that are special from where we live and poems and letters.

Over the summer my teacher T. F. went to NOLA and met up with another third grade teacher. They decided to make both classes buddies. We are working on trying to raise money for New Orleans. We have different ideas to raise money and awareness after hurricane Katrina like having bake sales and lemonade stands and making things like t-shirts and jewelry.

If you go by car to New Orleans it takes 20 hours. I am learning a lot about New Orleans through out this relationship.

Bye M. C. and c15ck.

Charlotte’s Web is an amazing fictional book by E. B. White. He is an incredible writer who has written books for kids and adults. He has written three books, Stuart Little, Trumpet Of The Swan and Charrlottle’s Web. Charlotte’s Web is about a girl named Fern and she saves a little pig’s life. Because she was so nice to the pig she gets to keep him and names him Wilbur. But when it is time for Wilber to go to the farm next door without Fern he finds out that soon he will be bacon and ham. So a spider named Charlotte has a plan to save his life again. With his helpful barnyard friends, will he be able to save himself? I recommend that as your next book that you read, you should read Charlotte’s Web. I think it if for ages six to twelve. It has many different versions of the movie. I think that anyone that reads this book will love it. So read it!

The Cay is an amazing adventure story about a boy (named Philip) that lives with his parents in a war zone. His mother decides to take him with to a different place so that they will not be hurt. While they on the ship to go to there destination the ship is attack by submarines. He goes on a life raft in shark-invested waters where he is with a black man named Timothy and his cat. They go to a lost island where Philip is blinded. But when a terrible storm kills Timothy will Philip be able to survive alone with out being able to see? If this sounds interesting to you than you should defiantly read The Cay. It is by Theodore Taylor. This book is good because it is a quick read and you will not be able to put it down once you start it. I think that it is a historical fiction book nut it also has lots of good descriptions. It makes you feel as though you where really there. This adventure story is full of sadness, excitement and cliffhangers. You should definitely read The Cay!!!

Half A Sixpence

Arthur Kipps is a poor young orphan boy works in a store and lives in a cellar. But when his friend tells him that he is going to be rich and get twelve hundred pounds a years, but when he really thinks it over, does he really want to be rich? Half A Sixpence is an amazing musical that has dancing and singing. The dancing is good but the singing is the best everyone has a great voice. I think the music is also so very good. The musical is very well done and is very thought out. I think that this show was very emotional, lively and most of all, funny. I definitely recommend that you should see the musical if you have not already.

Esperanza Rising

By Pam Munoz Ryan

Esperanza Rising is by Pam Munoz Ryan and is an historical fiction story about a girl named Esperanza. Pam Munoz Ryan uses lots of descriptive language. For instance when Esperanza kneels down the author writes, “Like a caterpillar, she slowly inched flat next to him, their faces looking at each other” (page 2). Her style is also fantastic. For example, on page 160 there is a wonderful paragraph describing Esperanza’s stitches. “The mountains and valleys in the blanket were easy. But as soon as she reached a mountain, she was headed back down into a valley again.”
Esperanza is rich and lives in Mexico, but when she suffers loss in her family it is hard to get enough money to support their family. Esperanza helps her family through their hard times by working. This is not only descriptive but the book shows the historical research of the author. For example, they cannot afford the expensive train tickets so they all sit a really dirty car with poor people, which is a big change for Esperanza and her family (page 67).
I think that this book is an amazingly written story and you should definitely read it!
