Our Forced Immigration Study

At The Dalton School in the 4th grade we study forced immigration and slavery. My class read a book called the Amistad. We learned that Amistad means friendship in Spanish.
Monica Edinger wrote a book called Africa is My Home. The book is about a girl on the Amistad named Sarah Margru Kinson. Our class read the book and took notes on it so we could write a post on it. The book is not published yet, but it is really good. (Read my other post about it).
The poet Natasha Trethewey came to our classroom two times. The first time she came she read us some of her poems. When she left the first time we all wrote Amistad poems. When she came back we read our poems to her and they were recorded on a pod cast. (You can hear it on our blog at Blogs.Dalton.org/edinger/).
My classmate brought in a bunch of cool things from Africa. He said, “They were all my dad’s.” He brought in clothes, a statue and some jewelry. Ms. Edinger also lived in Sierra Leone, Africa for a period of time. So she showed us some pictures and a slide show.
Our forced immigration study included many interesting things. We used books, poems, blogs, artifacts, and personal experience to learn about forced immigration and Africa.
